Just because it is hot outside does not mean that there are still not those out there that need basic transportation. We are working on trying to clear out as much inventory before Christmas (yes, the end of the year), as we will be doing another ReCycling event with a local elementary school in January. Last January, we pulled in over 110 bikes! We have to make room! So please come out and help prep bikes for our partner charities! MAM has already put in an order for some women's bikes, and we have a bunch of kids bikes that require very little work.

We are also working on trying to set up our first "spoke" at Clark Martinson's church - St. Mark's Methodist Church in the Heights. Trucks and a trailer would be very helpful!

The word spreads to Montrose

Here is a great story about how word about Chain Reaction Ministries is spreading. Larry and Carol Neal are members of Memorial Drive Christian Church. Their daughter works for Manhattan Construction located over in Montrose. Their daughter knew about Chain Reaction Ministries through her parents, and saw the opportunity to ReCycle Freedom with a person in need in their area. The note was written to Jeff Stones, our cornerstone in the repair shop!

Dear Jeff,

Thanks again for helping us replace Mr. Isaac’s bike. Mr. Isaac lives in the storage closet across the street from our office. Every morning he is out watering the plants and waves when we pull in the parking lot. He washes cars and does small clean up jobs for people to make ends meet. His primary transportation was a bike that he saved for and bought at a local pawn shop. Unfortunately, his bike was stolen a few weeks ago, leaving him no way to travel to work or see his sister in the medical center, or his pastor downtown. Thanks to you guys, Mr. Isaac is once again back in business with a new bike. The smile on his face when we gave him the bike was irreplaceable! Thanks again for helping out a friend in need.

Basic Transportation Helps MAM Client Get to Work Easier,

Cynthia Guerrero lives near 34th Street and TC Jester and does not have an automobile. Her new job as a Certified Montessori Instructor at Cypresswood Montessori School would have required her to walk over a mile to and from the nearest bus stop to the school. Thanks to a nicely refurbished bicycle from Chain Reaction Ministries, supplemented by a bicycle helmet and bike lock from Houston Cycling Centres, Ms. Guerrero’s commute will be quicker and more convenient. “I’m so grateful to MAM and its partners for this bicycle,” said Cynthia. “It will really make a positive difference in my life.” Cycle2Success is a partnership among the Employment Services program at Memorial Assistance Ministries, Chain Reaction Ministries (a major service project at Memorial Drive Christian Church) and Houston Cycling Centres. The partnership sources donated bicycles, refurbishes them and distributes them to clients who need them to seek work or to commute to and from work.

A little bit of sunshine. A Story from WHAM

These children were so excited to get the bicycles because theirs were stolen just after Christmas. Someone broke into their apartment and took the few items of value they had of which included the children’s bikes. The mother works as a teacher’s assistant so she struggles to make ends meet. The little boy suffers from a mild case of Autism but is well behaved and the daughter is a smart young lady that makes good grades. The daughter asked if she could ride her bike home instead of putting it in their vehicle but of course mom said no. Thank you for helping WHAM bring a little sunshine to what seemed like a rainy day. We are so fortunate to have a partnership with Chain Reaction Ministries.

Story from MAM - Heights to Humble Commute!

If you think you have a commute problem, you should try being Doug Humphrey. Doug lives on N. Shepherd, in the Heights. He works primarily as a caddy at Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Texas. Can you imagine doing that without a car? Doug does.

To get his “loop”, Doug walks a few blocks from his home to pick up the 009 METRO bus on Yale Blvd. He takes it downtown and transfers to the 259 bus to Humble. He gets off that bus at the EastTex Park ‘n Ride at US-59 and Aldine Bender. From here, Doug walks about 3.5 miles to get to his job at Redstone GC.

After Doug completes his round, he re-traces his steps. The 7 miles he walks every day is in addition to the walking he does with two golf bags on his back (an average round of golf is about 5 or 6 miles of walking).

Well, not anymore.

Cycle2Success has made Doug’s commute to work quicker and simpler by donating a bicycle it sourced through Chain Reaction Ministries, a program developed by Memorial Drive Christian Church, one of MAM’s member congregations. With a bicycle to go with his bus pass, Doug cuts out more than half of the daily miles he must walk to do his job.

The bicycle not only shortens his commuting time, it saves his energy for the job. For a caddy, more energy means better customer service and, hopefully, better tips.

Doug has a few words of thanks for MAM’s Cycle2Success program and for Chain Reaction Ministries:

“I would like to thank you for the blessing of this bicycle,” said Doug. “It has allowed me to go back and forth to my job as well to give me more freedom in day-to-day activities. You do not know how much I appreciate the assistance you have given me. MAM - Nick Chandler Success Story

Nick will be a sophomore at Spring Woods High School in the fall. Last summer he participated in the Spring Woods at MAM Summer Jobs Program. The program employs at-risk, rising high school students from Spring Woods Middle School. The goals of the program are: to expose students to a safe and accepting work environment, to model appropriate job skills and behavior, to increase students’ self-esteem and value by payment for work, to foster social skills through a mentoring relationship, to provide a compassionate adult sounding board and to broaden and enhance a sense of community. Last summer Nick interned at MAM 25 hours a week. After gaining job and life skills last summer, Nick expects to obtain employment this summer to help purchase school clothes and contribute to his family’s income. Nick hopes to land his job at Chick Fil-A, which is well known to work with high school students and help with college scholarships.

Nick is 15 and too young to drive, and his single mother works full time to pay the bills. She doesn’t have the work flexibility to leave her job to get Nick to and from his job. Nick has to fend for himself, which would have meant a summer of walking almost 3 miles each way from his apartment off Long Point to Memorial City Mall. He would have the option of taking the bus, although the bus is unreliable, takes extra time and would cost Nick money to ride.

With the bicycle, Nick has the problem solved, and he’ll also be able to use the bike to continue his extracurricular activities like swim team and band. The bike will also allow him to stay at the school after the bus leaves to study in the library or work on homework without younger siblings distracting him.

Bikes, Bikes, and More Bikes!

We are taking them in faster than we can send them out! Good thing we have a workday coming up this Saturday. Dawson and I picked up six bikes from Spring Valley Cycles last week. A beautiful very early Diamond Back. Before they even knew to call them mountian bikes. Its pair was a CoMo Summit that was completely chrome! As an added bonus, Dawson commented on the way home that he really likes "knowing that these unwanted bikes will change someone's life." He's got it!

Last night, I stopped by Betsy Humphries house and picked up five more bikes. They had been loved and ridden (hard) for a number of years by the family and kids. Now they will need some new ones.

Hope you can make it out to Memorial Drive Christian Church this Saturday from 2-4. You don't have to be a mechanic. Looks like we are going to moving inventory to a warehouse, cleaning out the workshop, and of course, cleaning up and repair bikes.

In celebration of National Bike Month, we are pushing hard on ReCycling Freedom! We are having a workday on Saturday, May 7th, from 2-4pm. We have reached out to the CenterPoint Cycling team (thanks to Jeff Stones) and hope that this new partnership will a model for reaching out to other cycling teams in the Houston area with opportunities to serve their community!

We have over 60 bikes that we are still working through, and we keep getting bikes weekly from individuals and our partners at Bicycle World and Fitness and Houston Cycling Centers. What a blessing! Also, we are working on finding warehouse space, and may be moving bikes into new space and cleaning up the shop (if things work out).

P.S. – put May 22nd on your calendar. On the heels of National Bike to Work Day on May 20, we will have a special workday on Sunday, May 22nd, from 8:30 to 10:30am. The members at Memorial Drive Christian Church have been asking about exactly how we go about our workdays, so we are giving them a chance to witness ReCycling Freedom in action firsthand. Come out, prep a few bikes, hang around and meet some of our members and donors to Chain Reaction Ministries!

Memorial Assistance Ministries Story

Below is a short note about a bike making a difference.

Gina is a client in MAM’s Employment Services program. She lives near Hammerly and Blalock in Spring Branch, and has been using a poorly-functioning Wal-Mart bicycle for the past 7 months. This old bicycle has continually created problems because of an ill-fitting chain assembly. Whenever she rides that bicycle faster than a slow creep, the chain disconnects itself. Fixing this problem would be far more costly than the bicycle is worth. The refurbished Huffy solves the problem, and will allow her to cover far greater distances in the same period of time.

Gina is looking for employment at a retail store or in a warehouse/distribution facility, and there are many such employment opportunities that can be reached from her home by bicycle. This means she is not limited to job opportunities located directly on METRO bus lines.

Gina is very grateful to Chain Reaction Ministries for the gift of a more reliable, higher quality bicycle that will help her to locate and maintain stable and meaningful employment in Spring Branch.

17 bikes to Ministeria de Esperanza

The last batch of kids bikes were delivered to a project of Chapelwood United Methodist Church's "Ministeria de Esperanza" after school program in old Spring Branch. Their program serves the largely Latino community in the area, and includes homework studies, physical activity, and bible study. These kids did not have bikes, and several of them have never had the joy of learning to ride. The school will be providing some photos and more stories soon. I will post when I get them.

Here is a short story from Memorial Assistance Ministries about where one bike went. I love this one, because I personally picked up this bike from a friend of mine - Hal Sharp, and was able to immediately email him the story and picture of his daughter's bike. What a blessing!

Today MAM’s Employment Services program distributed a refurbished Huffy bicycle to Jennifer Huerta, a MAM client.

Jennifer grew up in Spring Branch and now resides near I-10 and Blalock. She is looking for work in different areas of Spring Branch which are not along the major bus routes. She also wishes to consider employment in other parts of Houston, which will necessitate the combination of METRO passes and her bicycle.

Jennifer is interested in finding a job as a retail associate, and is returning to HCC in March to continue working towards a degree in Fashion Merchandising.

Thank you to Chain Reaction Ministries and to Spring Valley Cyclery for your assistance in supporting Jennifer’s efforts to improve her situation.

Here is a short story from West Houston Assistance Ministries about where a couple of the kids bikes went...

Evelyn (not real name) has a husband and two children. They are from Galveston, TX and have been in Houston for 7 months. Evelyn was a dishwasher at a restaurant in Galveston and her husband worked in construction. Since their move to Houston they have worked odd jobs to try to make ends meet but it is a struggle for them because their government assistance benefits haven't transferred to Houston yet. Evelyn's father helps them financially when he can but it isn't enough. They have lovely children ages 3yrs and 4yrs but one child is autistic and very active which adds more of a burden to their situation. Once the children saw the bicycles she almost had to restrain them and confine them to their truck. It was funny to see them jumping from seat to seat to get the best view of their new bicycles. Thank you so much. That made the day.

23 bikes ready to go! We worked through the "order" from Ministera de Esperanza, and should be able to fill part of it. We have three bikes ready for Memorial Assistance Ministries. I am sure that Westside Homeless Partnership will help us find clients for the remainder.

The next step will be to work through the 40+ adult bikes with a variety of issues. It will take a little longer, but the gift of an adult bike truly transforms lives.

We are working on some key partnerships with bicycle groups/teams that are nuts about bikes, and are looking for opportunities to give back to the community. A couple of good workdays and we might be able to get through the leftover inventory.

The plus side of 40+ bikes in a room - it smells like a bike shop!

Webelos - Working on their Handyman Badge

We found a new symbiotic relationship. Webelos need to earn badges. One of them is the Handyman. Component of it - learning basic bicycle maintenance. Hmmm - I wonder if you could not just fix up your bikes, but find someone who had bikes that needed fixing up to help others with basic transportation?

Clark Martinson and I had seven boys from First Presbyterian Church (across from the MFA-H) learning basic bike parts (in a cool relay), cleaning them, fixing flats, and adjusting brakes. They prepped eight bikes that they are going to distribute to a charity addressing the needs of homelessness in the Houston region and report back the stories of where the bikes go.

So - if you have a Cub Scout Den, or Boy Scout Troop that might be interested in this, please feel free to reach out to us!

WHAM Bikes

There were some great boys BMX freestyle bikes in there (Specialized, GT, and Haro). We visited about WHAM's employment service program, and their need for adult bikes.

This is a great new partnership right here in the Memorial / Spring Branch area where we reach out to more families - helping provide freedom and hope - all from a bike.

God's Chair

At the entrance to The Brookwood Community there is a large chair on a small pedestal. It is a visual reminder that God is always with us. In each of the workshops, there is also always one empty chair in a corner, or by a workstation. The citizens know the symbolism, and one pointed it out to me.

As I sat quietly Sunday morning in the living room, reading "Unbinding Your Heart" (a whole church program that we are doing), I closed my eyes and prayed - first thanking God for all the nudges that he has shown me about his presence in my life, then going down my prayer list. When I opened my eyes, and looked over into the kitchen, only illuminated by the morning sunlight casting through the living room I saw God's Chair.

What a blessing.

Move 'Em Out!

Clark Martinson contacted our friend and former employer John Breeding with Uptown Houston and found us some temporary storage for 70 bikes. Memorial Drive Christian Church needed the room back, and we had to move the bikes out by Saturday. In a few hours, and help from Boulevard Bob at Uptown Houston, bikes were loaded in four trucks and moved to Uptown Houston's warehouse nearby. The backdrop of the picture is all of the greenery used to decorate the trees that line Post Oak Boulevard from Thanksgiving to Christmas each year.

Clark and others are looking for permanent warehousing solutions. In the meantime - we are greatly appreciative of John and Bob at Uptown Houston for donating space.

Organizational Day Summary

We had good discussions about the future of the organization. We affirmed our mission, defined our differentiators, discussed the base organizational structure, and departed with key action items in our key operational areas. They are:
1) Operations: Locate offsite storage.
2) Business Planning: Apply for 501c3 status.
3) Marketing: Craft key marketing pieces and robust website framework.

These are to be accomplished in the next month and reported back at our next organizational meeting on Tuesday, 22FEB11 at 7:30pm at Memorial Drive Christian Church. This will be a monthly recurring meeting at the same time on the fourth Tuesday of the month. Put it on your calendar!

We picked up two new partners this week—West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM) and The Brookwood Community. WHAM has an employment services program, and just a week prior to meeting with me was about to embark on a bicycle drive to try to supply bikes to their clients. The Brookwood Community’s citizens either walk or bike around the 500 acre community. Bicycles are central to their basic transportation and fitness. It is a beautiful place (landscaping and citizens) that is a perfect fit with our mission. Many of their bikes are three-wheelers, but I know that some of you out there are looking for just such a challenge!

With 110 bikes, you can imagine that we need help. I would encourage each of you to pray for the continued development of Chain Reaction Ministries, and ask “What can I give?” Please and contact me to inquire about what is next and how you can get involved.

Helmets: The responsible thing to do

Everyone knows that you need to wear a helmet when you ride a bike. So it seem a natural progression of the business model that we, as a provider of bicycles, promote bicycling safety by weaving in helmets into the mission. Pete Dawson, a long time supporter, thought so to - and gave four helmets to get us started.

We collected six of so helmets through our Rummel Creek Elementary ReCycle Day, and those were quickly distributed to Westside Homeless Partnership.

Jeff Stones found a potential source for low cost helmets as well - and we are researching the monetary impact of providing a helmet with each of our bikes.

22JAN11 Workday Summary - 18 bikes ready to go.

With 110 bikes in inventory and limited space, we needed things to move fast this week. Mercedes Parrish from Westside Homeless Partnership picked up 15 bikes for their clients. Clark Martinson made room by picking up 12 bikes, and Saturday we prepped 18 bikes ready for some of our new partners. Mercedes found new homes for some of our bikes with Iglesia Fuente de Esperanza, who have a few families that they support in the Spring Branch area. John Malget connected us with West Houston Assistance Ministries, who also has an employment services program that we are going to investigate. While visiting the Brookwood Community (always a favorite for plants and flowers), John also found that they have a need for adult bikes for their clients.

Kevin Chang, our first volunteer from Facebook, came out to work on Saturday. We also had Jay Barr, and our workhorses - Jeff Stones and Taylor Benson. Youth included Carson Barr, Carson Lyda, Grant Lyda, Dawson Finklea, and Jess Thomas. There are some boys that are going to be thrilled with very nice Haro, Specialized, and GT freestyle BMX bikes. A beautiful Gary Fisher will provide reliable transportation for a tall adult man for years to come. Now to get them out in service!

Donald Miner - a success story from MAM and Houston Cycling Centers

We delivered a nicely refurbished Trek bicycle today to Mr. Donald Miner, a client of MAM’s Employment Services program. Here is a letter of thanks he sent us, FYI. It tells his story better than we could.

Dear Yolanda and Bob,

This is my letter of appreciation for the bicycle given to me by the Cycle2Success collaboration. Please make sure your partners at both Houston Cycling Centres and Chain Reaction Ministries also know how thankful I am.

I work as a Security Officer for Houston Museum of Natural Science and also for Five Star Event Services. I do not own a car. Numerous times I walk from Houston Museum during early morning hours, from 12 midnight to 6am, when there isn’t bus transportation; and for me, a cab is totally unaffordable. The new bike will help make my transportation issues much simpler, not to mention the good health benefits of some more physical activity.

Thank you also to Spring Valley Cyclery for the additional safety and protection equipment of a helmet and lock.

110 New Bikes!

That is not a typo. That is the power of the Rummel Creek Elementary PTA network. I watched with amazement as the flurry of emails were passed around. It was like the 1970’s Faberge Shampoo commercial where, “and they will tell two friends….” We picked up 7 bikes before the event, and then they just kept coming on Saturday, 15JAN11. The partnership with the Rummel Creek PTA is a good lesson in networking, timing, and relationship building. These lessons will be shared in our organizational meeting later this month, and detailed later in the summary.

We got two bikes from a reader of the Houston Examiner article referenced last month!

Now to the important point—inventory management. Jeff Stones, Taylor Benson, and I are assessing the current inventory and making plans for our Saturday, 22JAN11 workday from 2-4pm. We will have the parts we need for many of the bikes, but we need volunteers to help in the following ways:

1) Mechanics—We will process the easy bikes to fix first. You don’t have to be a pro mechanic. If you can turn a wrench, we can have you changing tires/tubes, seats, and handbar grips in no time. This is a great family activity, as testified by Sarah Tyler and her kids. It is a great opportunity for youth to learn basic bicycle maintenance.

2) Washing / Lubing—A great kids activity, and those that don't like grease.

3) Transportation - Delivery to our partners needs to happen before Saturday, 22JAN11.

4) New Partner Charities—If you want to help interview potential partner charities, please call John Malget, Associate Minister at 713.789.0060 or

18DEC10 Spring Valley Cycle - Memorial Assistance Ministries Summary

Our workshop is full again, thanks to the successful efforts of Jim Osbon at Houston Cycling Centers, Bob King at Memorial Assistance Ministries, and our own Dan Monson. This new partnership may serve as a model of a new supply chain. We leveraged the marketing power of HCC, the need within MAM, and MAM’s willingness to donate to CRM on a per bike basis for the cost of parts/repairs.

Two great new stories! As I posted on our blog (and thereby Facebook), MAM notified CRM on Thursday that they would be bringing one of their clients on Saturday, and they would like to have a bike for him. None of the CRM inventory was ready for use. As always, God’s timing is perfect, and Saturday morning when we arrived at Spring Valley Cycles at noon, there was a beautiful polished aluminum Cannondale MTB. The right size, and more importantly – in great condition. We test rode it around the parking lot, did a safety check, and presented it to Timothy Owens. He is part of MAM’s employment services program, and rides to and from his different job sites. He and his wife are starting a security and investigation service, and the bike allows him greater access and mobility and expand his available service range.

We got front page coverage in the Memorial Examiner. Paper dropped today.

Next event: Rummel Creek PTA ReCycle Day, 15JAN11 9am-2pm. Come out and me out newest partner – the Rummel Creek Elementary PTA. As part of their recycling program, we have partnered with them to have a ReCycling Day. We will be accepting bikes of all types at the school (625 Brittmoore Road, 77079). We presented to a packed house of 4th grade parents in December, and we expect a great turnout. We have already taken in 5 bikes from RCE families. We will need full size trucks (at 2pm) to haul bikes at the end of the event, and people to help take in inventory, and gather donor information.

I have a few more t-shirts and one polo available for purchase. They are white on black (like the logo at the top of this page. $20 for the t-shirt, $40 for the polo, and of course, the proceeds go to help purchase parts to keep us going!

Houston Cycling Center - MAM Intake Day Summary 18DEC10

Chain Reaction Ministries, in partnership with Houston Cycling Centers and Memorial Assistance Ministries, collected 15 used bikes to be refurbished. From Abandoned Bicycle in Lewisville to needed owner in Houston

Randy Grizzle, father of one of my business associates, Kristi Grizzle, likes collecting stuff - especially if it is free! He found a large Mongoose MTB on the side of a road with a sign denoting "Free" on it. He took it in, not really knowing what to do with it. While Kristi was visiting her parents over Thanksgiving, her Dad told of his latest find. Kristi knew exactly where it needed to go. She brought it back with her, gave it to Chain Reaction Ministries, and we fixed up the bike on our 11DEC10 workday. The bike was picked up Tuesday, and placed in service this week with a client from Westside Homeless Partnership! We are broadening our reach!

Workday Summary 11DEC10

Cleaning up the workshop a week prior was extremely beneficial. Jeff Stones and I organized parts, evaluated inventory, and make a list of parts that we needed. Then I lost the list. But my loss resulted in a great discussion with Jim at Spring Valley Cycles Saturday morning as I purchased parts. I met Jim when Kristin and I first came to Houston. He was leading a spinning class at the Post Oak YMCA. Yet another “Houston—the Smallest Big City in the World” story. Who would have thought that 12 years later I would have a partnership with him.

I think the bikes have started breeding. There were four more bikes in the workshop between the time that Jeff and I prepped the workshop and Saturday. What a blessing. Among the volunteers was Sarah Tyler (who was responsible for the “breeding” - picking up bikes from various places in Houston) brought her three kids, and they washed bikes together. Elizabeth Renton (landscape architect and business associate) and her husband Bill came out and they finished two bikes together. There was great joy in seeing families working together helping to give the gift of freedom. At the end of the day, there are 16 bikes that will find new homes just in time for Christmas. We also pulled in $150 in donations.

Next Saturday, 18DEC10, we will be having a bicycle intake day with our new partners—Houston Cycling Centers and Memorial Assistance Ministries (MAM). We will be at Spring Valley Cycles (9414 Gaylord, across from Memorial High School). All of the bikes that we pull in that day will go back to clients in Memorial Assistance Ministries Employment Services program. I am thankful to Mercedes at Westside Homeless Partnership for inviting me to a meeting of various social service groups in the Spring Branch area. I met Bob King at MAM through that connection, and now we have another very worthy avenue for connecting donors to needs!

The preparation for the work day started weeks ago. Clark Martinson picked up over 25 bikes from our partner bike store—Bicycle World & Fitness. I had a chance to chat briefly with the owner, Chris, at the Du the Bear Duathlon last weekend. (yes I did it—and actually renewed my passion for riding!) Our connection with the store continues to grow, and I am excited about where it will go in the future.

The day started by pulling out all of the existing inventory our of the Jerusalem Room—our new home at Memorial Drive Christian Church (MDCC). Milt Alberstadt (architect, handyman, neighbor, and great friend) did his magic in reorganizing the room, and hanging pegboard along one wall. There were over 25 bikes in various stages of disrepair ready for the 15 volunteers that came out. We had children washing bikes, youth learning basic repairs, and adults doing some of the dirtier jobs. We had some bikes dropped off in the afternoon, along with collecting $70 in donations.

Mercedes Parrish from Westside Homeless Partnership brought out two client families, and we supplied basic transportation to them— one bike going to the daughter of a client who is studying architecture at the University of Houston. A family adopted by Larry and Susan Pain (MDCC members), received three bikes. At the end of the day, we refurbished 16 bikes, stripped three, and are left with over 12 in inventory awaiting repair.

The day was a great success—with everyone finding a way to help make the reconnection of these unwanted bikes. I am continually energized by hearing new ideas of ways to connect to the community, and people’s interest in supporting this project. Of course, there are the bikes, but also things like graphic design (thanks to Mike Scott for our first release of our website last Friday), food (ChristCare group), and connecting with the community (Dan Monson). We could not do this without the handy work of Clark Martinson and Jeff Stones—the workhorse mechanics. I am thankful to all that helped prepare for the work day, and for those that came out to help in the repairs and room prep.

As we approach Thanksgiving and Christmas, I would like for you to think about the things you are thankful for, the blessings that God has given you, and how you can keep building momentum for this project. We have more exciting connections to the community in store for the end of the year, as well as a big push post Christmas.

OK - so I have been a little behind on posting. The only reason I have the blog is to post on Facebook - and given that there are other methods to post to Facebook, I have not been posting on the blog. The problem is that one day, should I ever wish to catalog the happenings of ChainReaction Ministries, I can't publish from Facebook. Thereby, I really need to get back after posting regularly on Blogger (late night hours, or when Reese [the dog] wakes me up at 3am, every night).

So with that I offer this bullet point summary:
1) May 22 was a great work day. 20 bikes, 8 ready to go to Westside Homeless Partnership
2) Did not do much with it over the summer. Kitchen remodel, and something overtook my garage. Oh yea - crap.
3) Memorial Drive Christian Church allowed me the use of a room to store the bikes and work on them!
4) Delivered five bikes to WHP the week of July 20.
5) Clark Martinson fixed up and delivered 15 to a mission on the east side of town in the same period. Way to go Clark!!!
6) What I pay attention to shapes and changes me.
7) Mackenzie and Dawson think that a) Dad has a bike hoarding problem and b) it is pretty cool to walk into the garage and pick a bike.
8) Kristin is waiting for me to clean the garage.
9) I need to post more often.
10) I need to tell the story more often.

The fact is that we each can give what we have. It is not really ours. It is God's. Do what you can. This is where he is calling me. I am only limited in my giving by the other worldly interferences of daily life. Trying to strike a balance between them. Every day.

Several of the guys in the Men's Disciple group at Memorial Drive Christian Church came by yesterday to work on bikes. Tom Lyda (Senior Minister), John Malget (Associate Minister), Cliff W., Jack B., and Justin came by to work on six bikes. At the end of two hours, we had refreshed four bikes to add to the one that just needed cleaning, and stripped two. There is no replacement for horsepower! The guys made short work of tuning up two adult bikes (one which is awaiting a saddle). My garage and front porch was a little crowded, trying to stay out of the rain. Time to arrange another visit to WHP.

Great Story from Westside Homeless Partnership

I finally had a chance to review emails over Spring Break. I got a great note from Westside Homeless Partnership.

Maria M. is the mother of six children. She was referred to Westside Homeless Partnership in September of 2009 by Memorial Assistance Ministries. Her husband abandoned the family during the summer and Maria could no longer pay the rent and utility bills. But for the financial assistance of Westside Homeless Partnership, her family would not have a home.

Maria’s family includes: Maria Fernanda (13) , Laura (7), Lenorris (6), Alejandro (5), Ivette (4), and Heily (3).

When the bikes were delivered, the children asked Mercedes to take them to the park so they could ride their new bikes. Maria was very excited for her children, none of whom had ever owned a bike. She was so proud of her children and admitted that she has never owned a bike nor does she know how to ride one. She is so grateful to Chain Reaction Ministries for giving each of her children a bike.

And that is what keeps me going.

My friend Bill G. and I played golf recently and I shared with him my odd little sideline habit. He has a much more entrepreneurial mindset than me, so he noodled some ideas about how to actually turn this into a full time adventure. Ideas were included a sort of medium to high end used bike store, to a loaner program, to an annual bike sharing program for youth. Pretty creative! Things to think about when you don't want to think of anything else....

College Bicycles

I took the kids to Texas A&M and to the George Bush Library this week on Spring Break. While there, we walked around campus, and I shared with them the rich traditions of Aggieland. The MSC was under construction/renovation, so I could not tell Dawson to stay off the grass. All the while, Mackenzie found it fascinating that there were so many bikes that were locked up and just left there. (I must be rubbing off on here - need to watch that) Many looked like they had been there for months, if not years. So, what to do with all those abandoned, unloved bikes? Exactly! Yet another great resource for bikes and parts.

My good friend Aaron J. visited with the University of Houston folks this week, and laid the groundwork for a discussion with them. Hoping to have a meeting with them next week.

Time for the March work day. Spring Break has been great with the kids. I have not checked my email, or my calendar. If I had, I would have realized that tomorrow is our March workday! My house, tomorrow, Saturday, 20 MAR 10, from 1-3pm.

So, in preparation, I went to Bicycle World and Fitness, bought parts, and picked up two more donations. A girls 20" Next BMX, and a Woman's Roadmaster Road/MTB. I have seven bikes to work on tomorrow. (including three adult bikes!) I can always use bodies! I have most the parts. Still need saddles (kids mainly, but adult ones are welcome). Stop by, say hi, bring a bike, bring tools, bring manpower. Hope you can make it!

After two cold weeks and other commitments, Milt and I delivered six kids bikes to Westside Homeless Partnership - Bringing our total to 14 in three months! Catherine Gassman visited with us about where these might go. Mercedes, a case worker at WHP, will help place the bikes with families in the program. They pledged to get me stories and photos of the families with their bikes so that we can complete the cycle of these bicycles.

What an amazing weekend. I finished three bikes on on Saturday thinking that I was clearing room in my house. 24 hours later, I had four more bikes! Robbie and Sarah F. at Memorial Drive Christian Church brought two kids bikes (unannounced) that needed almost nothing other than air and swapping some tires (boy+coaster brake=bald rear tire...the way it should be).

Then Will B. brought me two girls 20" bikes (pictured above) that were perfect! Wash and ride! I loaned out my first bike (a 1988 Trek 770 Pro Frame) to Will so that he could ride in the BP MS150. He wore a 10.5 shoe, so I fitted him with my old shoes and clipless pedals. I think he will be off to a good start!

The delivery to WHP on Wednesday just got increased to seven! Thanks to all who have been following, giving, and praying for this effort.

Finished three of the Bicycle World & Fitness bikes. Painted the rusty rims with a light coat of silver Rustoleum. Sealed them nicely. The green one could have used a new saddle, had one tear. Looks like my next outreach for help will be to Huffy or another manufacturer for basic parts (saddles, chains, 20" rims).

Parts, Parts, and More Parts!

Previously I spoke of the need for seats and 20" wheels. Pete D. brought several road saddles and other parts that will help. After pondering what to do with rusty rims (beyond the help of steel wools and raw fingertips), I find the advice of Clark Martinson ringing in my head. "Quickly sand it, paint it, and get it out the door." It is more than what they would have anyway, and they will be thankful.

If I don't, then the backlog will continue to grow. I picked up a men's MTB from Kim I. in Sugar Land today. Looks like a quick fix - except the seat. Get to practice truing wheels.

I had lunch with my former boss, John Breeding. I looked to him as a mentor for guidance related to the growth and feeding of ChainReaction Ministries. Here were his points:
1) Don't let it die.
2) Give with joy.
3) Don't let this effort overshadow your family
4) If you want it to grow, get others involved in the refurbishing of the bikes.
5) Determine what you want this to be in 5 years.
6) The market is there, you just need to figure out how to play it according to Item 5
7) You have to ask for what you need. Close the sale!

One month report

What a difference a month makes. 21 DEC 09 we delivered the first five bikes. We went from an idea, to a calling, to 8 bikes delivered in a month! Along the way, I met some friends, found out that my neighbors are there for me, and realized that I am not alone in this wacky little bicycle recycling world.

Next steps:
1) Refine the mission and goals
2) Get the website up

The bikes will come. I just need to pace myself.

God's Grip

John Malget, Associate Minister at Memorial Drive Christian Church always signs his emails, "in God's Grip." I get it now. I have a job that pays the bills and provides for my family – and I am blessed. But in my waking and hours and nighttime solitude, my head is filled with the concerns of others. The homeless families that have made the decision to start their lives over, with absolutely nothing – seeking your help and others.

Now that I started, I don’t know what the end state will be. As long as God keeps speaking (sometime shouting) to me, I keep working. Putting out the call for bikes. Hunting down unwanted ones from the backs of bike shops. And they keep coming. I see the need, and with His grip on my heart, mind, and body, I keep working.

Dear God, please don’t loosen your grip.

Where did the second delivery go?

The three bikes went to the Molina family, a single mom who not only cares for her kids, but also kids of family members that are currently incarcerated. She provides them a loving home, and hope that they will not be forgotten.

Catherine at Westside Homeless Partnership says that she has plenty of capacity for more bikes, and that she will help me find other groups similar to WHP around Houston.

I am not alone.

I found two other groups in Houston this week that are doing similar "bicycle recycling." One on the east side of Houston, and one in the Third Ward. They each have a different mission that what ChainReaction Ministries is focused on - but they are out there also. It has me thinking about the compelling story behind ChainReaction Ministries. Catherine Gassmann at Westside Homeless Partnership had a wonderful perspective on it. She spoke of the freedom that a bike provides to those with no other form of transportation other than their feet. The health benefits, improving basic mobility to and from work and to gain access to goods and services that would have been otherwise not accessible. It was reaffirming and provided me more focus on the mission.

January Work Day Report

A little drizzle did not keep three of my neighbors (who I am blessed to have as my very good friends), Jay Barr, Milt Alberstadt, and Will Harris from stopping by early. Jay cleaned up a MTB, Will repaired flats, and Milt helped prioritize the builds. Clark Martinson stopped by around 11:00 and brought his portable bike shop with him.

Clark demoed the proper way to overhaul a coaster brake hub. We finished a girls 20" Huffy and a Specialized Rockhopper MTB.

Pete Dawson stopped by with a KHS roadbike that had been collecting dust in his garage. Clark gave it a nice soapy bath, a light tune, and it is ready for the road!

Lessons Learned:
1) Sometimes no amount of steel wool can clean rust off of cheap chrome plated steel rims.
2) Rebuliding coaster brake hubs isn't hard. Just remember the order in which you pulled things apart. Oh - and don't use too much grease.
3) I have got to better at deciding how much time to put into a bike. There has got to be a "tipping point" at which the parts are better for future efforts rather than trying to rebuild the bike.

In need of 20" rims (front and rear), kids saddles, and kids grips. So to that end, I called Tom at Bicycle World & Fitness to see if he had anything - nothing today. Clark recommended Cyclone Cycles in Bellaire. Mark told me to come back Monday or Tuesday when he was not busy and he would visit with me about parts.

Delivered three bikes to Westside Homeless Partnership. Milt Alberstadt (neighbor helping in transport) and I Met Catherine Gassman - their Executive Director. She said that these three are destined for a single mom who recently lost her job. Not only does she take care of her three kids, but she also takes care of several family members kids. She is trying to break a vicious cycle, and the kids bikes will help give the kids some freedom, esp. when the weather gets better.

Went there to see a demonostration by Jeff Lenosky - a Mountain Bike Trials Professional riding for Giant. He was amazing! His control and balance were unparalleled. He holds the Bunnyhop World Record - 45.5 inches! He balanced a wheelie and put the front tire on a kids nose! He is an inspiration to those following their dream!

Where did the bikes go?

Mercedes, a Case Worker at Westside Homeless Partnership informed me that two of the bikes were ready to be Paid Forward. They have a married couple that they started on their program last month, each had a job, but no transportation. The green men's MTB/hybrid and the woman's MTB will be their main source of transportation to the METRO bus stop. From there, they load the bikes onto the front of the METRO bus, and then get them off at their destination. Basic transportation that enables this couple to get around a little easier.

Just getting started

Step two - set up blog. This followed step one - which was to create the Facebook page. Apparently I can import a blog to my Facebook page. This would be step three. In the meantime, I will just repeat what I posted on Facebook.

This is the outcome of a calling that I had when I received an email from Memorial Drive Christian Church about Westside Homeless Partnership needing four used boys bikes for Christmas. I had one in the garage that I could fix up. But I needed more. I put out a call to my friends and neighbors. The response was overwhelming! I got commitments for 10 bikes the first week.Of course my garage will not hold that many - so I have to do a little at a time. More to come!
